Every House Is Haunted

The destruction of a suburban landscape and ants who aren’t what they seem…it’s related, we promise!

Every House Is Haunted is our latest shadow puppet play. Director Emily Hynds, also BooTown’s Co-Artistic Director, will draw upon past relationship experiences for this project, her fifth shadow puppet play and BooTown’s ninth.

Every House is Haunted will continue a recent tradition of exploring a darker side of human nature begun with several past productions (Death and a Rollercoaster, White Raven) and although it’s not meant to be lighthearted, when there are puppets involved it’s hard to steer clear of that altogether. “There were two themes I wanted to explore with this show; how everything (and everyone) changes over time and that things (and people) are never what they seem,” says Hynds of her current inspiration.

Unlike past shadow puppet shows that Hynds has directed, Every House Is Haunted will not feature a main character or protagonist and will focus more on theme exploration. The action of the show centers around the digging of a landfill, an ant hill that lives inside of it, and the facade that goes up once the dump is full. “We’re definitely using all of the techniques we have learned over the years and it seems like moving into a more abstract character-less style is a natural progression,” Hynds says of her plot choices, adding, “at least for this show.”

Every House is Haunted is built and puppeteered by Jade Young (My Funny Bunny), BooTown’s Co-Artistic Director Lindsay Burleson, Peter Zama, and Hynds herself. Joe Wozny, a frequent shadow play collaborator, will write an original score that Hynds views equally important as the puppets themselves and remarks, “This team has been working together for awhile which lets us communicate so well about what we are trying to accomplish.” Traci Lavois Thiebaud will create original stop motion animation opening and closing sequences, also produced by Dinolion, as well as open for the final showing with a multi-media performance piece. BooTown is excited to try out a few new venues (The Brandon, Rec Room) as well as offer one free show at Big Star Bar.
